Many people would never consider buying a car from a Discovery breakers yard, but the truth is that sometimes it is hard to tell. So many cars are written off every year and end up in breakers yards that for people who know their stuff it is possible to turn a pretty profit on a refurbished write off. Not all insurance write-offs mean that the car can't be driven again, it just means the cost of repairing it is more than the cost of buying a whole new replacement, but to get it back on the road safely the work needs to be done properly.

 

This is the main problem with sellers not declaring that they sourced the car from a Discovery breakers yard, as if a buyer knew then they would rightly need to trust the person who had done the repairs, not just the people who made the car originally. The truth is that if someone hasn't declared that the vehicle came from a Discovery breakers yard then they probably don't want you to know, probably because they don't trust the repair work to pass a proper inspection.

 

This is why it's important to always check the registration of any used car you're looking to buy with the DVLA, as they will have records of whether the vehicle had ever been written off and sent to a Discovery breakers. Providing the Discovery breakers yard that the car went to are honest then they will show what state the car was in when it arrived and if the repairs have been properly inspected.
